for references, and then check them out. If the contractor is not willing to share
references, be cautious, they may not have any positive feedback to share. Call
the city planning and zoning department, and ask if they have any complaints
against the contractor. Before the contractor starts, be sure they have secured
all required permits. Find out where their offices are. You'll want someone who
is local in the event you need to call them back. And never pay for the job up
front; a contractor that will be there for you (no matter what) won't ask for
money before the job is done, with the possible exception of a small deposit to
ensure you are committed as well.
